2023년 10월 10일 앤 갤러리는 서용선, 강경구 작가의 전시 <Ordinary Scenes>을 개최한다. 그들의 시선에 포착된 일상의 장면들을 각자의 표현을 통해 인간의 본질과 아우라에 대한 관심사를 반영한 페인팅과 드로잉 작품들이 소개된다. 우리는 코로나를 겪으며 예기치 못한 사회 변화를 겪게 된다. 두 작가는 다양한 인간의 모습과 풍경을 통해 이전의 평범했던 일상의 장면들을 상기시키며, 코로나 전과 후의 변화 그리고 앞으로의 모습에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

 

서용선 작가와 강경구 작가는 비슷한 시기 서울대학교에서 서양화와 동양화를 각각 공부하였다. 그들은 국내외를 여행하며 목격했던 지하철, 카페, 상점 등 대중들의 일상 장면들을 화폭에 옮겨 담는다. 대담하고 거친 표현법을 구사하는 두 작가의 작품은 닮아 보이는 지점이 많지만, 세상을 바라보는 시선과 해석하는 관점에서 각자의 색이 다르게 묻어난다.

 

서용선 작가는 신화, 역사, 자화상 등 폭넓은 주제와 작업을 하며 가장 큰 관심사는 도시와 인간이다. 스스로 도시화의 목격자를 자처하며, 도시 속에서 소외된 인간의 본질에 대해 탐구하고 있다. 뉴욕의 화려하고 다양한 모습은 베를린의 강하고 역동적인 모습과 대비되어 호기심을 불러일으켰고, 그의 많은 작품의 배경이 되었다. 작가는 자신에게 결여된 특징을 가진 도시 풍경에 이끌렸다고 한다. 작가는 낯선 곳이나 여행을 가면 자화상부터 그리는데, 그에게 자화상은 자신을 들여다보는 시간임과 동시에 자신을 타자화하는 시도이다. 그의 작품은 있는 곳의 환경이나 분위기에 따라 배경과 색채가 변화한다.

 

강경구 작가는 작품을 통해 도시와 산에서 느껴지는 감정과 아우라를 포착하여 회화로 표현해 오고 있다. 그는 인간에게 영향을 미치는 자연과 환경에 대한 이야기를 풀어나가기 위해 국내외 여행을 적극적으로 다니게 되었다. 인도, 몽골, 티베트 등 문명화 되지 않고 인간 본연의 모습을 들여다볼 수 있는 곳에서 생명력을 발견하고 익명의 도시인, 평범한 일상을 그의 시선과 표현력으로 새롭게 재구성 하였다. 굵고 시원한 붓 터치와 아크릴, 먹, 흑연 등을 사용하여 특정한 재료에 국한하지 않은 다채로운 작업을 하고 있다.

 

이번 전시에서 서용선, 강경구 작가가 뉴욕, 베를린, 그리스, 이태리, 인도 등 다양한 나라를 여행하며 포착했던 장면의 페인팅과 드로잉을 다수 소개한다. 급변하는 사회 환경에 어떤 것이 정답이라고 말하기 어렵지만, 코로나를 겪기 이전의 평화로운 일상에 대한 기억과 우리가 놓치고 있던 도시의 풍경과 사람들의 모습들을 다시 살펴보며 익숙함에 소중함을 잊고 있지는 않았는지, 현재와 앞으로 우리의 모습은 어떻게 변화할지, 두 작가의 시선에 포착된 일상적인 장면들로 떠올려 볼 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다.

On October 10, 2023, N Gallery will host the exhibition <Ordinary Scenes> by artists Suh Yongsun and Kang Kyungkoo. Through their individual expressions, the paintings and drawings on display will reflect their interest in the essence of humanity and aura, as captured through their perspectives on everyday scenes. We have experienced unexpected social changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two artists aim to evoke memories of previous ordinary daily scenes through a variety of human portraits and landscapes, while also examining the changes before and after COVID-19 and what lies ahead.

 

The artists Suh Yongsun and Kang Kyungkoo both studied Western and Eastern painting respectively at Seoul National University during a similar period. They translate everyday scenes of the public such as subways, cafes, and shops that they witnessed during their domestic and international travels onto their canvases. While both artists employ bold and rough artistic techniques, their works share many similarities, yet their individual perspectives and interpretative viewpoints imbue their creations with distinctive hues.

 

Suh Yongsun engages in a wide range of themes and works, including mythology, history, and self-portraits, with a primary focus on cities and humanity. He considers himself a witness to urbanization, exploring the essence of alienation within the city. The vibrant and diverse scenes of New York contrasted with the strong and dynamic appearance of Berlin piqued his curiosity and served as backdrops for many of his works. The artist is drawn to cityscapes with characteristics that he perceives as lacking in himself. He mentions that when in unfamiliar places or traveling, he begins by drawing self-portraits. For him, self-portraits are a time to introspect and simultaneously an attempt to externalize himself. His works undergo changes in background and color depending on the environment and atmosphere of the place.

 

Kang Kyungkoo captures emotions and auras felt in both urban and mountainous settings, expressing them through his paintings. He actively travels both domestically and internationally to unravel stories about nature and the environment that influence humanity. In places like India, Mongolia, Tibet, where civilization has not fully taken root, he discovers vitality and encounters the essence of humanity. From anonymous city dwellers in these places to the ordinary aspects of daily life, he finds novelty. Using bold and brisk brush strokes, he works with a diverse range of materials including acrylic, ink, and charcoal, allowing him to create a wide array of artwork without being confined to specific mediums.

 

In this exhibition, artists Suh Yongsun and Kang Kyungkoo showcase numerous paintings and drawings capturing scenes from their travels to various countries such as New York, Berlin, Greece, Italy, and India During a rapidly changing societal landscape, it is challenging to define what is the definitive answer. However, this exhibition encourages us to revisit the memories of peaceful daily life before the pandemic, the landscapes of cities, and the faces of people we may have overlooked. It prompts us to ponder if we have forgotten the value of familiarity, and how our present and future may evolve. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the everyday scenes captured through the eyes of these two artists.
