2023년 8월 29일 앤 갤러리는 홍정우 작가의 전시 <아름다운 날들 (The Beautiful Days)>을 개최한다. 인생은 느끼는 사람에게는 비극, 생각하는 사람에게는 희극’ 이라는 말이 있다. 그는 인생이라는 서사에서 비극보다는 희극적인 면을 더욱 보여주고자 한다. 작가는 심리와 감정을 낙서의 형태로 즉흥적으로 표현해 내는 작업을 해왔다. 2021년도부터 시작되었던 그의 ‘아름다운 날들’ 시리즈는 추상적인 표현이 강했던 이전 작업과는 달리 불확실하지만 형태가 있는 이미지들이 부각되기 시작했다. 언뜻 어떠한 스토리를 담고 있는 듯한 그의 ‘아름다운 날들’은 작가의 삶 그리고 가족에 대한 사랑의 감정에 대해 무의식적으로 표현되었다. 인간의 삶에서 어두운 부분도 긍정적으로 표현하고자 한다는 작가의 말처럼 그의 작품은 순수함과 활기로 가득 차 있다.

 

홍정우 작가는 어릴 적 동네에 있던 낙서가 되어있는 벽의 모습을 구현하고 싶었다고 한다. 그래서인지 그의 작품은 물감과 바니쉬가 수차례 겹쳐져 견고하고 두터운 느낌이 든다. 겹겹이 쌓인 물감들을 긁어내고 덧칠하기를 반복하여 은은하게 올라오는 색상 위로 픽토그램 같기도 한 이미지들이 모여 한 편의 연극이 펼쳐지는 듯하다. 작가는 작품을 시작하기 전에 특별한 계획이나 주제를 정해두지 않고 그 당시의 얽혀 있던 감정을 하나하나 풀어가듯 화폭을 채워간다. 사람, 식물, 도형, 글자처럼 보이는 형태들은 고대 벽화를 보는 듯 해석할 수는 없지만 직관적으로 느껴지는 메시지들을 하나씩 감상하는 재미가 있다. 흥미로운 점은 화면을 구성하는 모든 요소들이 작가의 경험, 기억, 취향, 감정 등이 반영되어 있다는 것이다. 수학을 좋아하고 애니메이션에 관심있었던 작가가 우연한 기회에 판화를 접하게 되어 오랜 시간 그 기법을 연구하였고, 가족이 생기며 새롭게 느꼈던 감정들이 담기게 되었다. ‘아름다운 날들’에는 그의 시간이 함축적으로 녹아 있다.

 

이번 전시에서는 홍정우 작가의 300호 연작을 포함한 신작들과 판화 드로잉이 다수 소개된다. 2021년도 작품부터 2023년 신작까지, 일상에서 그린 종이 작품 시리즈 Daily Drawing, 판화기법을 적용한 드로잉 작품 시리즈 ‘너와는 상관없는 일’, 3개월간의 감정을 낙서로 기록한 ‘무아지경’ 시리즈 그리고 ‘아름다운 날들’ 시리즈로 구성된다. 순간의 단면을 그려내는 소형 작품과 그 서사를 담고 있는 대형 작품들이 전시되며 작품의 크기를 대비하여 보여줌으로써 이야기와 시간의 크기를 강조하고자 한다. 인생을 희곡으로 기록하고자 하는 이번 전시에서 우리 삶의 아름다움을 상기시킬 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다.

N Gallery will host an exhibition “The Beautiful Days” by Jungwoo Hong on 29th August. There is a saying that ‘life is a tragedy to the one who feels and a comedy to the one who thinks.’ He wants to show more comic aspects than tragedy in the narrative of life. He has worked on impromptu expression of psychology and emotions in the form of graffiti. The series ‘The Beautiful Days’, which began in 2021, highlights uncertain but figurative images, unlike his previous work, which had strong abstract expressions. ‘The Beautiful Days’ expresses unconsciously about the artist’s life and feelings of love for his family. His work is full of purity and vitality as his saying that he wants to express the dark sides of human life positively.

 

Hong has been hoping to make his own works from the graffitied wall of his neighborhood in his childhood. Perhaps because of that, the paint and varnish overlapped several times in his work making it feel solid and thick. With the repetition of scraping and reapplying layers of paint, a play seems to unfold in a gathering of pictogram-like images with the soft colors coming to the surface. He does not set a special plan or theme before the beginning of the work but fills the canvas as if solving the intertwined emotions of the time one by one. People, plants, figures, and forms that look like letters cannot be interpreted as if looking at an ancient mural, but there is a fun in appreciating the messages that feel intuitive one by one. What’s interesting is that all the elements making up the screen reflect the artist’s experience, memory, taste, and emotions. The artist who liked mathematics and interested in animation encountered print by chance and studied its technique for a long time, and it embodied new emotions he felt for having a family. His life is implicitly embedded in the series, ‘The Beautiful Days.’

 

In this exhibition, a number of new works with his original print drawings will be introduced. From the work of 2021 to the new work of 2023, ‘Daily Drawing,’ a series of paper works drawn in everyday life, ‘A Matter Irrelevant to You,’ a series of drawing works that applied print techniques, ‘Moo-a-ji-kyung’ (Ecstasy, the state of complete absence of ego), a series of recording 3 months of emotions in graffiti, and ‘The Beautiful Days’ series will be shown. It aims to display small works that depict a cross-section of the moment and large-scale works that embody the narratives emphasizing the size of story and time by showing them in contrast to the size of the works. It is hoped to serve as an opportunity to remind us of the beauty of our lives from this exhibition, which aims to record our life as a comedy.
