The studio being around nature resembled its artist, Jong Seok Yoon.

​

Despite the unexpectedly long-lasting pandemic, the artist never lost the battle with himself in this confined world and wrapped up in his own world of work.

​

Putting down dots with the elaboration and precision, Yoon’s trace of a million touches is marvelous. Every typical day has a meaning for him that he traced, collected, and recorded any special moment or thing of the day to create his own story.

​

Yoon records his everyday life by taking photos of the things that he wants to collect from what he sees and transfers the ones that are especially memorable and inspiring into his paintings. He recreates his own story by the process of tracking the time in history associated with selected images and connects himself with them in the present and what messages can this past leave to the future.

​

Due to his way of painting as putting down dots by syringe, Yoon is known as “the syringe artist”, but this word cannot describe his extraordinariness. His work demands over a million times of repetitive gesture as if the life of a monk that laziness is totally unacceptable.

자연과 함께하는 작가의 작업실은 작가를 닮아있었다.

뜻하지 않게 오래 지속되는 팬데믹, 그 갇힌 세상 속에서도 작가는 자기와의 싸움에서 절대로 지지 않고 자기만이 작업세계에 빠져 있었다.

​

정교함과 치밀함의 절정이랄까, 수천번의 터치가 응축되어 만들어낸 경이로운 흔적. 누구에게는 그저 스쳐지나가는 날들을 작가는 놓치지 않고 추적, 채집하고 기록하여 자기만의 결과물로 탄생 시킨다.

​

이미지 구상은 역사적 시간의 추적, 채굴하는 과정과 현재의 나와의 연결고리로 이어진다. 과거와 미래에 어떤 메시지를 남기는지와 겹겹이 쌓인 과거를 밟고 살아가는 현재의 나를 알아가는 방법들은 그만의 작은 점들이 모여 재창조된다.

작가는 “인생은 기쁨과 희망, 슬픔과 좌절, 이런 것들이 공존하는 과정을 통해 맛보게 되는 열매와 같다고 했다.” 주사기를 이용해 수천점을 쌓아올린 이미지라 하여 ‘주사기 작가’로 불리지만 그의 비범함을 표현하기에는 부족한 것만 같다. 스스로 선택한 이 고행의 작업 방식은 마치 수도자의 자세 그 이상이다.

작품을 들여다보면 전혀 예기치 못했던 시점에서 가슴 속 깊이 스며드는 감동의 여운에는 이유가 있다. 그것이 그의 그림이 전하는 메시지이자 힘이고 매력이다.
