BYUNGJIN KIM

b.1974, Korea

The sculptures ofKim Byungjinhave been developed through the primary principle of “de-mass sculpture.” As the concept of mass is absent, neither form nor structure is constituted through mass. Consequently, the binary spatial notions of inside and outside, structure and surface, as well as spatial formation grammars such as additive or subtractive methods, do not exist. Rather, space neither implies depth nor is deduced from a central structure toward the surface. Space emerges within the continuous flow of surfaces, and the sense of spatial mass remains only as a perceptual virtuality. For him, space is something that appears through surface sculpture and alongside it as a virtual presence. While paralleling the trajectory of formal and spatial transformations in modern sculpture, his work has established its own distinct sculptural language.

The metaphor of his sculpture arises from this multiplicity-based synthesis-that is, from the form and nature of relationality. This relationality may refer to relationships between humans, between humans and objects, or even extend to relationships among all beings. What is crucial is that this relationality is precisely the structure we perceive in the sculpture before us. It differs from the kinds of order that sculpture has previously demonstrated-whether the balance of Mondrian, the tension of Smith, the reduction of Gabo, the construction of Constructivism, the phenomenological structures of Minimalism, or the fragmented structures of Postmodernism. Kim Byungjin’s sculpture is a metaphor of relationality in which differences generate synthesis while preserving their differences. Accordingly, his space is not something divided or filled, but something that emerges through such synthesis.
