불에 흙을 굽는다는 것.

그릇을 익히기 위해 불을 지피기보다는 불을 느끼기 위해 그 흔적을 보기 위해 불을 지핀다. 하얀 불에 얼굴을 그슬리며 장작 타는 소리를 듣고 있는 것은 나의 가장 큰 취미 중의 하나이다. 그것은 소성이기 이전에 일종의 불장난과 같다. 따라서 나에게 있어서 소성은 작가를 통한 그릇의 완성단계이기 보다는 불이라는 자연적 현상과 나와의 수평관계에서 제어되지 않는 그 자체로서의 생명을 갖고 있다. 그 과정에 나는 단지 노동을 제공하고, 나는 불을 바라볼 수 있는, 장작 타는 소리와 냄새를 느낄 수 있는 취미적 만족을 얻는다. 나는 소성 후에 가마에서 기물을 꺼낼 때 예상된 결과물을 얻기보다는 예기치 못했던 사고를 접하게 되는 것을 무척이나 즐긴다.
