앤갤러리는 7월 19일부터 8월 14일까지 독일 조명 브랜드 미드가르드 리히트(Midgard Licht)와 스털링 루비(Sterling Ruby), 장 보고시안(Jean Boghossian), 마누엘라 카린 크나웃(Manuela Karin Knaut), 바하티 시모엔스(Bahati Simoens), 구자승, 김강용, 강경구, 이석주, 김선두, 조원강, 김대관, 윤종석, 오유경, 홍정우, 마승범, 박선교 작가가 참여하는 전시 《Light Across Layers》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 바우하우스 디자인 철학을 구현하며 독일 산업 디자인의 역사에서 전환점을 이룬 조명 브랜드 미드가르드 리히트의 대표 모델 AYNO를 중심으로, 국내외 16인의 작가들이 선보이는 회화 및 조각 작품으로 구성된다.

미드가르드 리히트(Midgard Licht)는 1919년 조절식 조명의 발명가인 커트 피셔가 설립한 브랜드로, 오늘날까지 독일에서 오리지널 도구를 사용하여 조명을 생산하고 있다. 미드가르드의 정밀한 기계 미학과 독창성은 바우하우스의 아방가르드 디자인 철학을 계승한다. 초기 모델 TYP 113 테이블 램프는 1926년 바우하우스가 데사우의 새 건물로 이전할 때 발터 그로피우스(Walter Gropius), 조세프 알버스(Josef Albers)의 집과 바우하우스 학생들의 스튜디오와 아파트에 설치되었다. 이후 미드가르드는 TYP 113과 TYP 114를 기반으로 모듈형 조명 시스템을 개발하였고, 1950년대에는 스프링 밸런스 램프(spring-balanced lamp) 등의 여러 선구적인 모델을 선보이며, 오늘날까지도 생산되고 있는 독일식 데스크 램프의 전형이 되었다.

이 역사적 유산 위에 현대적인 감각을 더한 AYNO 조명은 독일의 디자이너 스테판 디에즈(Stefan Diez)가 설계한 모델로 미드가르드 브랜드의 기술과 미학의 정수를 담고 있다. 이번 전시에서 AYNO 조명은 회화 및 조각 작품과의 상호작용을 통해 단순한 조명의 역할을 넘어 감각의 층위를 넘나드는 매개체가 된다.

산업 디자인과 순수 예술, 기능과 미학의 경계를 비추는 《Light Across Layers》 전시는 빛을 하나의 언어적 매체로 삼아 동시대 시각 예술이 품고 있는 다층적 의미를 조망한다. 스털링 루비, 장 보고시안, 마누엘라 카린 크나웃, 바하티 시모엔스, 구자승, 김강용, 강경구, 이석주, 김선두, 조원강, 김대관, 윤종석, 오유경, 홍정우, 마승범, 박선교 작가의 작품과 미드가르드의 AYNO 조명은 서로 다른 시대와 세대, 시선과 물성을 교차시키며 이를 투영하는 빛의 상호작용을 통해 감각과 사유의 지평을 확장한다.

From July 19 to August 14, N Gallery presents Light Across Layers, an exhibition featuring the renowned German lighting brand Midgard Licht alongside works by Sterling Ruby, Jean Boghossian, Manuela Karin Knaut, Bahati Simoens, Chasoong Koo, Kangyong Kim, Kyungkoo Kang, Sukju Lee, Sundoo Kim, Wonkang Cho, Daekwan Kim, Jongseok Yoon, Youkyeong Oh, Jungwoo Hong, Seungbum Ma, and Sunkyo Park. At the center of the exhibition is the AYNO lamp—Midgard Licht’s signature model that embodies the brand’s legacy as a turning point in the history of German industrial design and a material realization of Bauhaus ideals. The exhibition brings this iconic design into dialogue with contemporary painting and sculpture by 16 artists from Korea and abroad.

Midgard Licht was founded in 1919 by Curt Fischer, the inventor of adjustable lighting. The brand continues to manufacture its products in Germany using original tools, preserving the integrity of its design and engineering. Midgard’s precision mechanics and inventive aesthetics reflect the avant-garde spirit of Bauhaus design. In 1926, the early model TYP 113 table lamp was installed in the new Bauhaus building in Dessau, including the homes of Walter Gropius and Josef Albers, as well as student studios and apartments. Building on the TYP 113 and TYP 114, Midgard later developed modular lighting systems, and in the 1950s introduced pioneering models such as the spring-balanced lamp, which remains an archetype of German desk lamps still in production today.

Bringing a contemporary sensibility to this historical foundation, the AYNO lamp—designed by German industrial designer Stefan Diez—encapsulates Midgard’s commitment to both technical innovation and timeless aesthetics. In this exhibition, the AYNO goes beyond the function of a lighting fixture to become a medium that illuminates new perceptual and conceptual layers through its interaction with the artworks.

Light Across Layers explores the intersections of industrial design and fine art, of function and form, and of light as both material and language. The participating artists' works, alongside the AYNO lamp, span different generations, perspectives, and materials. Through the dynamic interplay of light and form, the exhibition opens up expanded dimensions of perception and reflection.
