September 2 - October 16 2026
N Gallery presents Memories, a solo exhibition by Jungwoo Hong, at Brickwell in Seochon, Seoul, from September 2 to October 16, 2026. Presented as a special off-site exhibition, the show traces the arc of Hong’s artistic practice, bringing together works from his early career and new works presented here for the first time.
The ancient Greeks personified memory as Mnemosyne, regarding her as the wellspring of art and inspiration. In Greek mythology, Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, was believed to be the mother of the Muses, the goddesses of art and inspiration—a relationship that symbolically affirms creativity’s roots in memory. Memory is not a fixed fragment of time preserved intact, but a process of continual recollection and reconstruction as time unfolds. In this sense, memory forms a fundamental ground for artistic inspiration and creation, as accumulated experiences and sensations are continually reinterpreted and transformed in the present.
Jungwoo Hong unfolds fragments of memory and emotion across the canvas through the act of scribbling, drawing lines through pure, instinctive movement before intention or planning takes hold. These spontaneous lines and forms become a language of release in themselves; through repetition, layering, scraping, and overpainting, they gradually build the density of memory and emotion. Looking closely at the lines, marks, and forms that make up his intimate compositions, one can sense the accumulated narrative of the artist’s life within them.
Building on this visual language, Hong has expanded his practice by probing the nature and meaning of memory. In <Moo-a-ji-kyung>, a work from his doctoral studies, he explored states of immersion and the unconscious through the primal act of scribbling; in <The Blurry Landscape>, emotions difficult to put into words take shape through blurred and indistinct surfaces. <The Landscapes Remembered in the Body> focuses on traces of sensation inscribed in the body rather than consciously remembered facts, revealing layers of embedded memory through an abstract visual language built from scraping and overlaid paint. In <The Beautiful Days>, the changes marriage and parenthood brought to the artist’s life are woven into the work, with love for his family and the warm moments of everyday life with his child taking shape in a range of figurative images. His recent work <The Memory Garden> gathers and reconstructs memories accumulated over the course of life, visualizing fragments of memory and emotion drawn from different times and experiences and creating new relationships and meanings among the images that compose the canvas. In <Body Memories, Remaining Lines>, a new work presented here for the first time, Hong brings together years of formal inquiry on the canvas, extending his practice further through a more experimental approach.
Memories explores, through the memories and experiences Hong has accumulated, how memory takes on new meaning through present experience. Lines and forms that emerge from the artist’s personal memories and emotions become a distinctive visual language on the canvas, evoking the experiences and memories of those who encounter the work. The artist’s personal memories, mediated through the work, meet the viewer’s own experiences, calling forth individual memories and emotions. Memories born of different moments in different lives meet and resonate within a single picture plane, generating new meanings. In this way, Hong’s lines connect his memories to ours, bridging the past and the present while reaching ever onward toward memories yet to come.
