김선형은 1963년 서울에서 태어나 휘문고등학교를 졸업했으며, 1988년부터 현재까지 서울, 부산, 대구, 인천, 안양, 도쿄, 교토, 타이중 등에서 100회가 넘는 개인전을 개최하였다.

또한 국립현대미술관이 주최한 《89 청년작가전》, 《90 젊은 모색전》, 《작은미술관》, 《움직이는 미술관》, 국립현대미술관 서울관 개관기념 《정원전》에 참여하였으며, 국립중앙박물관이 주최한 2015년 《조선청화, 푸른빛에 물들다》전에서는 김환기, 이우환과 함께 회화 작가 3인 중 한 명으로 선정되어 전시에 참여하였다.

대학 졸업 이후에는 스승인 남천 송수남 선생의 수묵화 운동으로 대변되는 현대동양회화전에 참여하며 활동하였고, 《에꼴 드 서울》, 《서울미술대전》, 그리고 호암미술관의 전신인 호암갤러리에서 1988년부터 1990년까지 3회 연속 개최된 《현대한국회화전》(동·서양화 작가 50인전)에 최연소 작가로 연속 초대되어 참여하는 등, 현대 한국화단의 한 축에서 동양적 회화관에 입각한 다양한 실험적 표현을 선보이며 300여 회의 단체전에 작품을 발표하였다.

'Garden Blue'라는 타이틀의 파란색 위주의 작업은 2006년부터 현재까지 지속하고 있으며, 1994년부터 현재까지 국립경인교육대학교 미술교육과 교수로 재직하며 작품 활동에 매진하고 있다.

Born in Seoul in 1963, Sunhyoung Kim graduated from Whimoon High School. Since 1988, he has held more than 100 solo exhibitions in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Anyang, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Taichung.

He has participated in numerous major exhibitions organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), including Young Artists 1989, Young Artists 1990, Small Museum, Moving Museum, and The Garden, commemorating the opening of MMCA Seoul. In 2015, he was selected as one of only three painters—alongside Kim Whanki and Lee Ufan—for Blue and White Porcelain, Soaked in Blue, organized by the National Museum of Korea.

Following his graduation, Kim actively participated in the contemporary ink painting movement led by his mentor Song Soo-nam (Namcheon). He was also invited to exhibit in École de Seoul, the Seoul Art Grand Exhibition, and Contemporary Korean Painting, a major invitational exhibition featuring fifty leading Korean painters held for three consecutive years (1988–1990) at the Ho-Am Gallery, the predecessor of the Ho-Am Museum of Art. As the youngest invited artist to participate in all three editions, Kim established himself as a significant figure in contemporary Korean painting, presenting experimental works rooted in an Eastern philosophy of painting through more than 300 group exhibitions.

Since 2006, he has continuously developed his signature Garden Blue series, centered on variations of blue. His forthcoming exhibition at Mari Gallery marks his third solo exhibition with the gallery.

Since 1994, Kim has served as Professor of Art Education at Gyeongin National University of Education, while continuing his artistic practice.
