24 October - 11 December 2026
앤갤러리는 2026년 10월 24일부터 12월 11일까지 김선형 작가의 개인전 《The Bell, The Bird, The Sky》를 개최한다.
N Gallery presents 《The Bell, The Bird, The Sky》, a solo exhibition by Sunhyoung Kim, from October 24 to December 11, 2026. The exhibition brings together new works from Kim's long-running GARDENBLUE series alongside a selection of key works, presenting the artist's distinctive painterly world built around a single color: blue.
Throughout human history, blue has long been associated with the sacred, transcendence, and eternity. The ancient Egyptians regarded lapis lazuli as a sacred stone symbolizing kingship, the divine, and the heavens, while ultramarine, the pigment made by grinding lapis lazuli, was more precious than gold in Renaissance Europe. True to its name, derived from the Latin ultramarinus, meaning "from beyond the sea," ultramarine was itself a precious material brought from distant lands across the sea. Blue, encompassing the sky, the sea, and the immeasurable vastness of the universe, has come to symbolize, across both East and West, what lies beyond the limits of the world perceptible to human beings. While drawing upon this historical resonance and accumulated meaning, Sunhyoung Kim's blue is reimagined as his own distinctive color, one that holds the cycles of nature from sunrise to sunset and the infinite depth of the world.
Kim's encounter with blue can be traced back to an evening in winter 2006 at Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye. As he listened to the sound of the beopgo (a large ceremonial drum) at the quiet mountain temple, he happened to witness a bird rising into the sky as the sound of a bell rang out from the opposite bell pavilion. The deep, blue sky that entered his field of vision at that moment remained deeply imprinted in his mind. Since then, he has continued to build a distinctive painterly world through the singular color of blue.
Trained in traditional East Asian painting, Kim does not simply reproduce the language of traditional ink painting, but reinterprets it through his own contemporary sensibility. Instead of meok, the traditional East Asian ink medium, he works with acrylic paint, handling it as though it possessed the material qualities of ink. With a single blue, he unfolds a diverse spectrum of tonal variations, ranging from transparent, delicate sky blues to dense, deep blue-black hues. His painting surfaces move fluidly between the material qualities of hanji and canvas. Depending on the absorbent qualities of hanji, where paint spreads and seeps into the surface, and the layered materiality of canvas, the same color undergoes different temporal processes and remains in multiple layers and depths. In this way, Kim engages with materials and media from both East and West through his own distinctive approach, expanding the possibilities of contemporary East Asian painting.
Sunhyoung Kim's blue extends into Garden, a distinct painterly world. For the artist, Garden does not refer to a particular place or space, but to nature, the universe, and the living world itself as contemplated by the artist. The images of flowers, rocks, and other forms that appear in GARDENBLUE are not representations of specific subjects, but serve as vehicles for conveying the vitality of nature and the flow of the world as he observes them. These images of the garden are evoked through the sensory quality of blue and transformed into the artist's distinctive formal world. In the spirit of xiaoyao you (逍遙遊), or the "wandering freely" described by Zhuangzi, GARDENBLUE appears to fully embody Kim's wuwei (無爲), or non-action — an attitude that follows the order of nature — through the way it is created without being bound by any predetermined purpose or plan, as if entrusting itself to the natural flow of things.
For Sunhyoung Kim, concepts such as tradition and modernity, and the generation and dissolution of nature, are not opposing forces but boundaries in which different elements coexist in harmony, forming part of a continuous cycle. GARDENBLUE conveys these profound reflections on life and art through a sensibility of blue. Through this exhibition, we invite viewers to encounter the living blue within the garden that Sunhyoung Kim has cultivated over many years, each from their own perspective and through their own senses.
