앤갤러리는 2025년 9월 6일부터 10월 25일까지 홍정우 작가의 개인전 《기억의 정원》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 홍정우 작가가 축적해온 기억들의 비가시적인 감각을 시각화한 <기억의 정원> 신작을 중심으로 <몸이 기억하는 풍경>, <아름다운 날들>, <너와 상관없는 일들>, <너의 미소> 시리즈의 작품으로 구성된다. 본 전시에서는 홍정우 작가 고유의 낙서 형식을 기반으로 한층 더 확장된 실험적 시도들이 담긴 새로운 작품들을 선보인다.

홍정우 작가의 작업은 어떠한 계획이나 목적 없이 순수하고 본능적인 움직임이 그려내는 선에서 출발한다. 작가는 누구나 그을 수 있는 선으로 누구나 말하지 못하는 기억과 감정을 그려낸다. 낙서와 같은 선들은 몸에 새겨진 기억의 편린들과 감정의 조각들을 화면 위로 펼쳐낸다. 무의식적 감각이 이끄는 행위로 화면을 만들어내는 과정에서 작가 자신도 의식하지 못했던 내면의 감정이 드러나며 잊혀진 듯한 기억을 환기시킨다. 작품의 화면에 등장하는 인물, 동물, 자연물 등의 다양한 형상과 기호, 문자는 기억의 단면들을 상징하는 이미지로, 작가의 개인적인 경험과 감정에서 비롯되었으나 특정한 해석을 유보한 채 관람자의 직관적 감각에 마주한다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 이러한 형상들이 보다 적극적으로 등장하면서 이미지 간의 관계나 화면의 구성 방식에서도 밀도 있는 조형적 실험이 두드러진다.

이번 전시에서 처음 선보이는 신작 <기억의 정원>은 기억의 본질과 의미를 탐구하는 작업으로, 작가가 삶의 기억을 수집하고 재구성하는 과정이기도 하다. 낙서처럼 시작된 선과 형상은 그 자체로 해소의 언어이며, 반복과 겹침, 긁어내기와 덧입힘을 통해 점차 기억의 층위와 감정의 밀도를 형성한다. 화면을 내밀하게 구성하고 있는 요소들을 하나씩 들여다 보면 시간이 쌓여 두터워진 삶의 서사가 느껴진다. 판화 기법의 조형성과 감각적 즉흥성이 맞닿는 <너와 상관없는 일>은 작가 고유의 시각적 언어가 두드러지는 작품이다. 추상적 선과 형상, 상징적 문자와 다양한 색채가 얽혀있는 화면은 일상 속의 우연한 순간들과 감정들이 담겨 있는 듯 하다.

기억은 단순히 과거의 회상이 아니라, 현재의 존재를 실재적으로 구성하며 미래를 정립하게 한다. 철학자 앙리 베르그송(Henri Bergson)은 기억을 ‘지속(Durée)’의 흐름 속에서 현재와 과거가 분리되지 않고 공존하는 방식으로 보았으며, 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)는 ‘회상(Reverie)’의 개념을 영혼이 가장 깊은 감수성의 중심으로 되돌아가는 것이라고 말했다. 이처럼 기억의 회상은 자신의 시간을 마주하고 자아를 이해하는 과정이며, 이를 통해 타인과의 연결이 가능해진다. 서로의 기억이 교차하고 연결되는 관계 속에서, 우리는 각자의 존재를 증명하는 의미를 발견하게 된다.

작가는 이번 전시에서 기억의 조각들이 흩어지고 모이는 과정을 하나의 정원처럼 구성하고자 했다. 서로 다른 크기와 매체적 특성을 지닌 작품들 사이를 거닐며 기억의 단면들을 따라가게 된다. 작품의 화면은 각자의 내면에 다가와 누구나 품고 있는 기억의 잔상과 감정의 흔적을 마주하게 한다. 작가가 그려낸 삶의 서사는 작가 개인만의 기억에서, 우리의 기억과 공명하는 감응의 언어가 된다. 홍정우 작가가 자신의 언어로 가꾼 ‘기억의 정원’에서, 각자의 내면 속 기억과 감정의 씨앗을 발견하고 자신만의 새싹을 틔워내는 순간을 경험하길 바란다.

N Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Jungwoo Hong titled ‘The Garden of Memory’, running from September 6 to October 25, 2025. This exhibition centers on new works from <The Memory Garden> series, which visualize the invisible sensations of accumulated memories, alongside works from earlier series including <The Landscapes Remembered in the Body>, <The Beautiful Days>, <A Matter Irrelevant To You>, and <Your Smile>. The show features Hong’s signature doodle-like line work expanded through bold experimental approaches in these new works.

Jungwoo Hong’s creative process begins with pure and instinctive movements, from which lines emerge without a specific plan or purpose. Using lines that anyone can draw, the artist expresses memories and emotions that often go unspoken. These doodle-like lines unfold fragments of embodied memories and pieces of emotions across the canvas. Through this unconscious, sensory-driven act of creation, emotions previously unrecognized even by the artist emerge, evoking memories that seemed forgotten. The figures, animals, natural elements, symbols, and text that appear in the works symbolize facets of memory. While rooted in the artist’s personal experiences and feelings, these images remain open to interpretation, inviting viewers to engage with them intuitively. In this exhibition, these forms appear more prominently, and the relationships among images and compositional structures reveal dense, sophisticated formal experiments.

The newly introduced <The Memory Garden> series explores the essence and meaning of memory and represents the artist’s process of collecting and reconstructing life’s memories. Lines and shapes, beginning like doodles, become a language of resolution, gradually building layers of memory and emotional depth through repetition, overlapping, scraping, and layering. By closely examining the intricate elements that compose the work, viewers can sense the thickened narrative of accumulated time and lived experience. The work <A Matter Irrelevant to You> combines printmaking techniques with spontaneous expressiveness, highlighting the artist’s unique visual language. Abstract lines and shapes, symbolic characters, and various colors intertwine to evoke fleeting moments and emotions of everyday life.

Memory is not simply the recollection of the past but constitutes the reality of the present and shapes the future. Philosopher Henri Bergson understood memory as the coexistence of past and present within the flow of ‘durée’ (duration), inseparable and continuous. Gaston Bachelard described ‘reverie’ as a return to the deepest core of the soul’s sensibility. In this way, the act of recollection is a process of facing one’s own time and understanding the self, enabling connections with others. Within relationships where memories intersect and intertwine, we discover meanings that affirm each other’s existence.

For this exhibition, the artist intended to compose the scattering and gathering of memory fragments as a garden landscape. Visitors wander among works of varying sizes and media, tracing fragments of memory. The works reach inward, inviting viewers to encounter the lingering impressions and emotional traces that everyone carries. The life narratives depicted by the artist may begin as personal memories but transform into a language of resonance that touches the memories and emotions of others. In the ‘The Memory Garden’ cultivated through Jungwoo Hong’s distinctive visual language, we hope visitors experience the moment of discovering seeds of memory and emotion within themselves and nurturing their own sprouts.
